This pertains to your application for promotion from your position of Personal Assistant to the position of Senator of the Republic of the Philippines.

The employee manual of this Republic, otherwise known as the Constitution, pertinently states,

Article VI Section 3. No person shall be a Senator unless he is a natural-born citizen of the Philippines and, on the day of the election, is at least thirty-five years of age, able to read and write, a registered voter, and a resident of the Philippines for not less than two years immediately preceding the day of the election (Emphasis supplied).

The primary objective of this constitutional provision is part of the very essence of democracy – that the people may freely run for office, provided they possess the above qualifications.

What Happens When You Sell Your Vote

Election is just around the corner and with it comes soooo many things:

1) Your candidate’s face plastered all over the walls, trees, electric posts, vehicles, and your pets (I hope they are not that stupid posting their mugs on your pets…)

2) This year, so many campaign jingles to the tune of PSY’s Gangnam Style (bumubula ata bibig niya per instance) are played over and over in your immediate vicinity.

3) Commercials… oh so many commercials about them…

Ok, before I go waaaay off-topic, one glaring thing always comes out whenever there is an election: VOTE-BUYING. I focus on this since as voters, we have the absolute control over who will be in position.

Now, I have seen people sell their votes for petty cash, which, coupled with financial mismanagement, will be consumed before the week ends. If not cash, groceries, which can go away quickly as well. It is always the advocate of many people to discourage vote-buying because these people trade their entitled benefits for just a wad of cash. Problem is, these things don’t penetrate brains who are hungry for food and money. But then, what DOES happen when people sell their votes? I’ll try to mention it in the perspective of a regular citizen (and it is open for correction or clarification, if this is read by the experts)

Ano ang ipinapagpalit mo pag nagbenta ka ng boto?

Your entitled benefits (health care, housing, access to basic services) given to you by the government (paid by your taxes) in the form of allocated funds for your city/ vicinity.

How?

Let’s say Mayor ABCD offers the voters of his city Php 2,000 each if they vote for him. City Population is 1M (small city-setting). Now, if 750,000 of these are registered voters and they all vote for him, he spends an earth-shaking amount of Php 1,500,000,000!!!! Now, if I am the Mayor and I spent THAT much in buying your votes, do I let that money go without a fight? Nope… I look for my “Return of Investment. Where? Your guess is as good as mine… The fund allocated by the government to the city! Now, will 1 year be enough? No, the mayor spends the rest of his term collecting the money, thus denying all his citizens the basic needs they deserve. Ever wonder why there is not enough budget for your health center? No doctors and meds available? Ever wonder why your roads needs “annual repair” due to sub-standard materials? People, this is what happens when you sell your vote… You enable the person to turn from a public servant to a businessman who collects his profit from your benefits. You waive your right to be entitled to these when you sold your vote. And you have no right to complain…

Basically, you are selling your future and your city’s future for a wad of cash and petty grocery… And you wonder why your city is in shambles…

As voters, we must NOT let our votes, our future, our children’s future be exchanged for momentary satisfactions….

Vote Wisely, Our Votes, Our Country’s Future.
